Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Herbert (1625–1659) was an English politician who worked in the government, specifically in a group called the House of Commons, during the 1640s and 1650s.

Who Was John Herbert?

John Herbert was an important person in English politics during a time of big changes. He was a Member of Parliament (MP), which means he helped make decisions for the country.

Early Life and Family

John Herbert was born in 1625. His father was Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke, a powerful noble, and his mother was Susan de Vere. When he was 13 years old, in 1638, John started studying at Jesus College, Oxford, which is part of Oxford University. He later earned a Master of Arts degree from Oxford University in 1648.

A Young Politician

In 1646, John Herbert was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Monmouthshire. This meant he represented that area in a government group known as the Long Parliament. His job was to help bring new members into the government.

However, in December 1648, he was removed from his position in Parliament during an event called Pride's Purge. This meant he couldn't be an MP for a while.

Later Years

John Herbert was chosen again as an MP in 1659, this time for Wilton. He served in a government group called the Third Protectorate Parliament. Sadly, he died in 1659 when he was about 34 years old. He was buried in Westminster Abbey on November 23, 1659.
