John Hermansader (born 1915, died 2005) was an American artist. He was a painter and a graphic designer. He also loved jazz music. John is famous for creating amazing designs for Blue Note Records album covers.

Early Life and Learning

John Bancroft Hermansader was born on November 1, 1915. He grew up near Reading, Pennsylvania. In the 1930s, John went to art schools. He studied at the Memphis Academy of Art in Tennessee. He also learned at the New Bauhaus in Chicago, Illinois. Later, in New York City, he studied art with a famous painter named Robert Motherwell.

Jazz Music and Album Art

John loved jazz music very much. In 1939, he and his wife Rosemary started a group called the Hot Club of Newark, New Jersey. This group was for people who loved jazz. John was their first president.

In 1951, Blue Note Records started making new records. John Hermansader became one of their first designers. He worked with other artists like Paul Bacon. These artists helped create the special look of Blue Note album covers. Their designs showed the feeling of the music. They used different styles, including modern art ideas.

John Hermansader was also a passionate painter. He created beautiful abstract paintings. These paintings were full of color and movement. He often got ideas for his art by listening to jazz music. His artwork was shown in different galleries. Some of his paintings are in art collections today.
