A Leader for Scotland
In 1284, John Comyn II agreed with other Scottish nobles that Margaret, Maid of Norway should be the next queen. She was the granddaughter of King Alexander III.
Helping to Rule Scotland
After King Alexander III died, John Comyn II became a 'Guardian of the Realm'. This meant he was one of the main leaders of Scotland. He served as a Guardian from 1286 to 1292. He was also one of the six 'Regents' who helped rule for young Margaret.
Claiming the Scottish Crown
John Comyn II was a descendant of King Donald III. Because of this, he was one of thirteen nobles who claimed the right to be king of Scotland. This event is known as the 'Great Cause'.
However, John Comyn II did not strongly push his own claim. He wanted to support his brother-in-law, John Balliol, who also wanted to be king.
Supporting King John Balliol
The Comyn family was very powerful in Scotland. John Comyn II was a loyal friend to King John Balliol. He helped Balliol in his struggles against King Edward I of England. Some people even think the Comyn family was the main reason Balliol became king and why Scotland later rebelled against Edward's demands.
Defending Scotland's Borders
Like his father, John Comyn II was trusted by King Alexander III to protect Scotland's northern lands. This was important to stop attacks from Vikings and Danes.
John Comyn is also known for building several large castles. Parts of Balvenie Castle (near Mortlach) and Inverlochy Castle can still be seen today.
Family Life
John Comyn II married Eleanor de Balliol. She was the daughter of John I de Balliol and the sister of King John of Scotland.
Together, John and Eleanor had two children:
- John Comyn III of Badenoch: He married Lady Joan de Valence. Her father, William de Valence, 1st Earl of Pembroke, was the half-brother of Henry III of England. This made him an uncle to Edward I of England.
- A daughter: She married Sir Andrew Moray of Petty.
His Final Days
John Comyn II of Badenoch passed away in 1302 at Lochindorb Castle.
