John Jewsbury Bradley (April 20, 1869 – May 21, 1948) was an important United States Army officer. He became a brigadier general. During World War I, he led the Eighth Infantry Division.
Growing Up
John Jewsbury Bradley was born in Lake View, Illinois. He attended the United States Military Academy. This famous school is often called West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1891. After graduating, he joined the Fourteenth Infantry.
In 1893, John Bradley married Caroline Sladen. Her father, Joseph A. Sladen, had received the Medal of Honor. Caroline's brother was Fred Winchester Sladen. John and Caroline Bradley had three children: Frances, John Jr., and Joseph.
His Military Journey
Bradley served in the Philippines. This was a conflict overseas. He also served in China. For his bravery, he received the Purple Heart medal. He also earned a Silver Star medal.
In 1912, he finished a special course called the Army School of Line. The next year, he graduated from the Army Staff College. From 1917 to 1918, Bradley worked for the War Department General Staff. This important role earned him the Distinguished Service Medal.
On June 26, 1918, he was promoted to brigadier general. He went to France with the American Expeditionary Forces. There, he commanded a brigade, which is a large group of soldiers. This brigade was part of the 82nd Infantry Division. In November 1918, General Bradley took command of the Eighth Infantry Division.
Special Awards
Besides his American medals, John Bradley received awards from other countries. France gave him the Officer of the Legion of Honor. England honored him with the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George. Italy also recognized him with the Commander of the Order of the Crown. These awards showed his importance and service.
Later Life and Legacy
General Bradley retired from the army in 1927. He retired as a colonel due to health reasons. After leaving the military, he became a lawyer in New York state. He also helped the Disabled American Veterans Service Foundation. This group supports veterans who were injured.
Bradley was a member of several clubs and organizations. These included the Military Order of the World Wars and the Army and Navy Club (Washington, D.C.). John Jewsbury Bradley passed away on May 21, 1948. He was seventy-nine years old. He died in Detroit, Michigan.
