Sir John Jouel's Story
A French writer named Jean Froissart wrote about Sir John Jouel. Froissart was a poet and historian for the royal court. He wrote about Jouel's brave actions during the Battle of Cocherel.
A Brave Knight's Actions
Froissart described Jouel as a very bold knight. He wrote that Jouel "performed, that day, many very gallant feats of arms." This means Jouel fought very bravely. He never gave up or retreated during the battle.
A Critical Mistake
However, Froissart's writings also showed a big mistake Jouel made. Jouel was tricked into chasing Du Guesclin's forces. The French soldiers pretended to run away. This mistake led to a major problem for Jouel's side.
The Battle of Cocherel's Impact
Because of this error, Jean de Grailly was captured. He was the Captal, or leader, of the Navarrese army. The Navarrese forces then became very disorganized. This mistake had a big impact on the battle.
