Early Life and Education
Growing Up in Chicago
John Kass was born in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up on the city's South Side. Later, his family moved to Oak Lawn, a suburb near Chicago. His father was a Greek immigrant who owned a grocery store.
High School and College Years
Kass went to Harold L. Richards High School. He graduated in 1974. While in high school, he played on the varsity football team. He also helped create the school yearbook. After high school, he studied film at Columbia College in Chicago. He worked on the student newspaper there. Even though he did not finish college, he gained valuable experience in journalism.
Career as a Journalist
Starting at the Daily Calumet
John Kass began his career as an intern. He then became a reporter at the Daily Calumet newspaper. This early experience helped him learn about reporting. It prepared him for his long career in journalism.
Writing for the Chicago Tribune
In 1980, Kass started working for the Chicago Tribune. He worked there for 38 years. He often wrote about political topics for the newspaper. His columns were shared with many other newspapers. This is called syndication. It means his articles reached readers across the country. Kass also wrote about lighter topics, like how to cook beer can chicken. He left the Chicago Tribune in June 2021.
Radio Broadcasting Work
Besides writing, John Kass also hosted a talk-radio show. He worked for WLS-AM, a radio station owned by Cumulus Media. He hosted the show with Jake Hartford first. Later, Lauren Cohn joined him as a co-host. His last radio show was on February 26, 2015.
Family Life
John Kass married Betty Castela in 1986. Their wedding took place at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Oak Lawn. They have two sons, who are twins. The family currently lives in Saint John, Indiana.
