Who Was Sir John Knox?
Sir John Knox was a successful businessman who lived in Ireland during the 1600s. He became a very important person in Dublin, serving in high positions. He was known for his business skills and for helping to manage the city.
Early Life and Moving to Dublin
John Knox was the son of William Knox and Fingwel Florence Campbell. His family came from a place called Lifford. In the 1650s, John Knox decided to move to Dublin. There, he started his own business and quickly became a very successful merchant.
A Successful Merchant and Leader
Because of his success, John Knox was chosen for important jobs in Dublin. In 1675, he became the Sheriff of Dublin City. This meant he was a key official responsible for law and order in the city. Later, in 1685, he was elected Lord Mayor of Dublin. This was the highest position in the city government.
On 6 February 1685, John Knox received a special honor. He was knighted by Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl of Clarendon. At that time, Clarendon was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, who was the King's main representative in the country. This knighthood meant John Knox could now be called "Sir John Knox."
Making Money for Ireland
Sir John Knox also played a big part in Ireland's money system. On 29 December 1685, he received a special permission from the King. This permission, called a Privy Seal grant, gave him the only right to make copper coins for the Kingdom of Ireland. He was allowed to do this for 21 years. This was a very important business deal for him and for Ireland.
His Later Life and Legacy
Sir John Knox passed away in 1687. He did not have any children to inherit his businesses. So, the special right to make copper coins went to his brother-in-law, Colonel Roger Moore. Sir John Knox is remembered as a powerful merchant and a key figure in Dublin's history during the 17th century.
