John Lander Harper (born May 27, 1925, died March 22, 2009) was a famous British scientist. He was a biologist who studied ecology, which is about how living things interact with their environment. He also focused on plant population biology, which looks at how plant groups grow and change over time.

About His Life

John Harper was born in 1925. He went to school at Lawrence Sheriff School in Rugby, England. He then studied Botany, the science of plants, at Oxford University. He earned his first degree in 1946 and his higher degrees in 1950.

After finishing his studies, Dr. Harper continued his research at Oxford for nine more years. He also spent some time studying in California, USA. In 1967, he became the head of a new department called the School of Plant Biology at Bangor University in North Wales.

Leadership and Awards

John Harper was a leader in the field of ecology. He was the president of the British Ecological Society from 1966 to 1968. He also led the European Society for Evolutionary Biology from 1993 to 1995.

He received many important awards for his work.

  • In 1978, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honor for scientists in the UK.
  • He won the Darwin Medal in 1990. This medal is given by the Royal Society for major advances in biology.
  • In 1999, he received the Millennium Botany Award.
  • He also won the Marsh Ecology Award from the British Ecological Society in the same year.
  • In 1989, he was awarded the CBE, which stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire. This is an honor given by the British monarch.

John Harper wrote several textbooks about ecology and population biology. These books helped many students learn about these subjects.

The British Ecological Society has a special award named after him. It's called the John L. Harper Young Investigator's prize. This prize is given every year to a young author who writes the best paper in the Journal of Ecology.

John Harper was also a member of the British Humanist Association. He passed away on March 22, 2009.
