Early Life and Family
John Leslie was the son of the 10th Earl of Rothes, who was also named John Leslie. His mother was Hannah Howard. She was the Countess of Rothes and passed away in 1761. Hannah Howard came from a family in Thorpe, Norfolk.
Becoming the Earl
When his father, the 10th Earl, passed away, John Leslie inherited the title. This made him the 11th Earl of Rothes. He took on this important role in 1767.
Marriage and Succession
On 4 April 1768, John Leslie married Jane Maitland. They did not have any children together.
After John Leslie's death in 1773, the title of Earl of Rothes needed a new owner. Since he had no children, the title went to his sister, Jane Elizabeth Leslie, 12th Countess of Rothes. She was six years younger than him. There was a challenge from their uncle, Andrew Leslie, who also wanted the title. However, after a long legal process, Jane Elizabeth Leslie successfully kept the title.
John Leslie's widow, Jane Maitland, later remarried. She married Patrick Maitland, who was the younger son of the 6th Earl of Lauderdale.
