John Leslie, the 10th Earl of Rothes (born 1698, died 1767) was an important leader in the British Army. He became the top commander of the army in Ireland from 1758 until his death in 1767. He was also a General and a Knight of the Thistle.
Military career
John Leslie was born in 1698. He was the oldest son of John Hamilton-Leslie, the 9th Earl of Rothes. His mother was Lady Jean Hay.
In 1715, John Leslie joined the army as an officer. He started in the 9th Regiment of Dragoons. Two years later, in 1717, he moved to the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards.
He became the leader of the 21st Regiment of Foot in 1721. The next year, he became the Earl of Rothes after his father passed away. In 1723, he was chosen to represent Scottish nobles in Parliament.
In 1732, he took command of the 25th Regiment of Foot. He fought in the War of the Austrian Succession. He was at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743. He then moved to the Horse Grenadier Guards. He also fought at the Battle of Rocoux in 1744.
In 1751, he moved to the military staff in Ireland. By 1758, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the army there. His home, Leslie House in Leslie, was badly damaged by fire in 1763. He passed away at his home in 1767.
In 1747, a new law changed how some old rights worked in Scotland. Because of this law, he sold the job of Sheriff of Fife. This job had been a family right since 1540.
Family life
In 1741, John Leslie married Hannah Howard. She was the daughter of Matthew Cole. They had two sons and two daughters together.
Their children included John Leslie, 11th Earl of Rothes. Their daughter, Jane Elizabeth Leslie, 12th Countess of Rothes, later became the Countess. She took over the title after her brother. Their youngest daughter, Mary, married William Colyear.
After his first wife died, he married Mary Lloyd in 1763. Mary Lloyd later married Thomas Hamilton.
