The John Lewis Christmas advert is a special TV commercial released every year by the British department store John Lewis & Partners. Since 2007, these adverts have become a big part of the Christmas countdown in the UK. They often get a lot of attention and praise when they come out. For a couple of years (2019-2020), the adverts also promoted Waitrose & Partners, which is another store.
The songs in these adverts are usually cover versions. This means they are new recordings of older, well-known songs by different artists. These songs often become very popular on the UK Singles Chart. Some famous artists who have had their music featured include Ellie Goulding, Lily Allen, and Tom Odell. In 2018, Sir Elton John was the first artist to both perform in and star in one of the adverts.
The advertising agency Adam & Eve/DDB in London has been creating these adverts since 2009. The popularity of the John Lewis adverts has also made other stores, like Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer, create their own big Christmas campaigns.
