Early Life and First Photos

John Loengard was born in New York City in 1934. He became interested in photography when he was eleven years old. This happened after his father talked about buying a new camera. John started taking pictures for his high school newspaper.

When he was a student at Harvard College in 1956, Life magazine asked him to photograph a ship. The ship had gotten stuck on Cape Cod. This job was the start of his long connection with Life magazine. John looked up to photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and W. Eugene Smith. He wanted to mix his feelings with his news photos, just like they did.

A Career at Life Magazine

John Loengard joined the staff of Life magazine in 1961. In 1972, Life stopped printing weekly issues. John then became the picture editor for special issues of Life.

He also helped plan and launch People magazine in 1974. This was for Time Inc., the company that owned Life. In 1978, John was very important in helping Life magazine start up again as a monthly magazine.

In 1986, Life magazine won its first award for "Excellence in Photography." This award was given by the American Society of Magazine Editors. John Loengard continued to be Life's picture editor until 1987. He also wrote ten books about photography.

He taught photography at the International Center of Photography in New York. He also taught at The New School for Social Research and at workshops across the country.

In 2004, John Loengard received the Henry R. Luce "Lifetime Achievement Award" from Time Inc.. In 2005, American Photo magazine called him "One of the 100 most influential people in photography." Vanity Fair magazine said he was a photographer, editor, teacher, and expert. They said he did all these roles with great skill and intelligence.

In 2018, he was added to the International Photography Hall of Fame.
