John Lysaght, 1st Baron Lisle (born 1702, died 15 July 1781), was an important Irish politician and a nobleman. He held the title of Baron Lisle in the Peerage of Ireland.
Early Life and Family
John Lysaght was born in 1702. He was the oldest son of Nicholas Lysaght and Grace Holmes. His mother was the daughter of Colonel Thomas Holmes.
John studied at Trinity College Dublin. His father, Nicholas, owned land in southern Ireland. Nicholas was also a soldier who served in the army of William III. John's grandfather, also named John Lysaght, was a soldier too.
Political Career
John Lysaght became a member of the Irish House of Commons. This was like being a Member of Parliament. He represented the area of Charleville.
He served in this role from 1727 until 1758. On 18 September 1758, John Lysaght received a special honor. He was made a Baron Lisle in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became a nobleman.
His Family
John Lysaght married Catherine Deane on 17 December 1725. Catherine was the third daughter of Joseph Deane. Joseph Deane was a very important judge in Ireland. John and Catherine had five children together:
- John Lysaght, 2nd Baron Lisle: He later inherited his father's title.
- Joseph: He married Henrietta. Joseph passed away in 1799 and had no children.
- James: He never married.
- Margaret: She married William Hodder.
- Mary: She married Kingsmill Pennefather. He was also a Member of Parliament.
After Catherine passed away, John Lysaght married again in 1746. His second wife was Elizabeth Moore. She was the only daughter of Edward Moore. John and Elizabeth also had children together.
John Lysaght passed away in July 1781. His son, John, then became the 2nd Baron Lisle.
