Early Life and Education

Edward Barry was the son of Edward and Jane Barry. He went to college at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. In 1717, he earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts. This means he completed his basic university studies.

He then traveled to the Netherlands to study medicine at the University of Leyden. In 1721, he became a Doctor of Medicine, which is a high degree for a physician. He later received the same medical degree from Trinity College Dublin in 1740 and from the University of Oxford in England in 1761.

A Busy Medical Career

Sir Edward Barry had a very successful career as a doctor.

  • In 1732, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a big honor for scientists and shows he was highly respected.
  • He also became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 1740. This is a group for top doctors in Ireland. He even became its president in 1749, which means he was the leader of this important medical group.
  • In 1745, he was made the Physician-General to the Army in Ireland. This meant he was the chief doctor for the army in Ireland.
  • From 1754 to 1761, he taught as a professor at Dublin University. His title was Regius Professor of Physic, which means he was a royal professor of medicine.
  • Later, in 1762, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, another very important medical group. He also served as a "censor" in 1763, which meant he helped make sure doctors followed the rules.

Life in Politics

Besides his medical work, Sir Edward Barry was also involved in politics.

  • In 1744, he became a member of the Irish House of Commons. This was like being a member of parliament or a representative in the government for Ireland.
  • He represented a place called Charleville until 1760. This meant he spoke for the people of Charleville in the government.
  • On August 1, 1775, he was given the special title of Baronet, of the City of Dublin. This was a high honor from the King.

His Family

Sir Edward Barry was married twice. His second marriage was to Jane Dopping in 1746. She was the daughter of Anthony Dopping, who was a Bishop. Sir Edward had four sons from his first marriage. With his second wife, he had three more sons and two daughters.

He passed away in Bath, Somerset. His oldest son, Nathaniel, inherited his Baronet title. One of his other sons, Robert, also became a Member of Parliament for Charleville, just like his father.
