John Marmion Edmond (born April 27, 1943 – died April 10, 2001) was a brilliant scientist. He was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His main work was in marine geochemistry and oceanography.

Geochemistry is the study of the Earth's chemistry. Oceanography is the study of the ocean. John Edmond studied the chemicals in the ocean. He also looked at how carbon dioxide moves through the ocean. He explored many different water places. These included deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold polar oceans. He also studied rivers and lakes in faraway places. These were in South America, Africa, Siberia, and Tibet. John Edmond and his team were amazing. They could measure tiny amounts of chemicals in water. They found elements at levels never seen before.

Life and Education

John Edmond was born on April 27, 1943. His hometown was Glasgow, Scotland. He went to the University of Glasgow. There, he earned his first degree in 1965.

He then moved to the United States. He studied at the University of California, San Diego. He got his PhD in 1970. This was from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Scripps is a famous place for ocean research.

Awards and Recognition

John Edmond was a very respected scientist. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special honor for top scientists. He was also a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. This is a big group for Earth and space scientists.

He received important awards for his work. These included the James B. Macelwane Medal. He also won the Urey Medal. These awards show how important his discoveries were.

His Impact on Science

John Edmond passed away on April 10, 2001. Francis Albarede was a leader in geochemistry. He said that John Edmond gave us many new ideas. These ideas changed how people understood the world. John Edmond's work helped us learn more about our planet's oceans. He showed us how chemicals move through them.
