Serjeant John MacLaren Erskine was a very brave Scottish soldier. He lived from 1894 to 1917. He was part of the British Army. He received the Victoria Cross (VC). This is the highest award for bravery. It is given to soldiers from Britain and Commonwealth countries.
A Hero from Scotland
John MacLaren Erskine was born in January 1894. His parents were William and Elizabeth Erskine. He grew up in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.
When World War I started, John joined the army. He became a serjeant in the 5th Battalion. This unit was called The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He was 22 years old during the war.
His Amazing Bravery
John Erskine showed incredible courage on 22 June 1916. This happened near Givenchy, France. Because of his brave actions that day, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. This is a very special medal.
John MacLaren Erskine sadly died on 14 April 1917. He was killed in action near Arras, France. He is remembered as a true hero.
