John Mayhew (born March 27, 1947 – died March 26, 2009) was a musician from England and Australia. He was the third drummer for the famous progressive rock band, Genesis. Progressive rock is a type of music that often has long songs and complex parts. John Mayhew played with Genesis from September 1969 to July 1970.

Joining Genesis

John Mayhew joined the band Genesis in August 1969. He took over from their previous drummer, John Silver. During his time with the band, John Mayhew helped create some of their early music. You can hear his drumming on the Genesis album Trespass. He also appears on the Genesis Archive 1967-75 box set, which is a collection of their older songs. In 1970, another well-known drummer, Phil Collins, took his place in the band.

Life After the Band

After leaving Genesis, John Mayhew's life became a bit of a mystery to many fans. People wondered what he was doing. There were even rumors that he had passed away or was missing. However, these rumors were not true. In 1979, John Mayhew moved to Australia. He started a new life there and found work as a carpenter, building things with wood. He later became an Australian citizen.

He met up with other former band members like Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett. It was a happy reunion for everyone. At the convention, John Mayhew even played the drums again. He performed the song "The Knife" from the Trespass album with a tribute band. It was a great moment for fans who had wondered about him for so long.

His Legacy

John Mayhew passed away on March 26, 2009, just one day before his 62nd birthday. He died from a heart attack. Even though he was only with Genesis for a short time, his drumming helped shape their early sound. He is remembered by fans for his contributions to the Trespass album and for being a part of the band's history.
