Early Life and Family

Sir John Maynard was born in 1592. His father was Sir Henry Maynard from a place called Estaines Parva in Essex. His mother was Susan Pearson. John had an older brother named William, who later became the first Lord Maynard.

We don't know much about John's very early schooling. However, we do know that he began studying law in London in 1610. He attended a famous legal school called the Inner Temple.

John Maynard became a Member of Parliament (MP). This means he was chosen to represent people in the English Parliament. He was elected for Chippenham in 1624 and again in 1625.

On February 2, 1626, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight of the Bath. This happened on the same day that King Charles I was crowned.

Maynard continued his political career. He was elected as an MP for Calne in 1626. Later, in 1646, he became an MP for Lostwithiel during a very important time called the Long Parliament.

Challenges in Parliament

During his time in Parliament, John Maynard faced some difficult situations. He suggested that the army should be sent home. In 1647, he was one of eleven members of the House of Commons who were accused by the army of causing problems. They were accused of working against the army and against the rights of the people.

Because of these accusations, Maynard was given permission to leave Parliament for six months. He likely went to the countryside during this time. In 1648, he was held for a period in the Tower of London. While he was there, he wrote to the House of Lords. He insisted that he had the right to a fair trial by other important people. He was eventually released.

Later Life and Legacy

John Maynard eventually inherited his father's estate in Tooting. He passed away on July 29, 1658. He was buried in Tooting Churchyard, along with his son, who was also named Sir John Maynard.

He was married to Mary, the daughter of Sir Thomas Myddelton. Together, they had three sons and two daughters. Most of his children did not have children of their own. His daughter Anne married Sir John Musters.

Sir John Maynard is shown in a famous detailed picture. This picture is called "Charles I Demanding in the House of Commons the Five Impeached Members."
