John McLane (born February 27, 1852 – died April 13, 1911) was an important person in New Hampshire history. He was a furniture maker who became a politician. He served as the 50th governor of New Hampshire from 1905 to 1907. He was born in Scotland and moved to the United States when he was very young.

About John McLane's Life
John McLane was born in a place called Lennoxtown, Scotland, in 1852. When he was just one year old, his family moved to America. They first settled in Manchester, New Hampshire. Later, in 1869, they moved to a town called Milford.
After finishing school, John learned how to be a cabinetmaker. This means he learned to build furniture. In 1876, he opened his very own furniture shop. His business became very successful. It grew into one of the biggest makers of post-office furniture in North America.
This success helped him with other businesses too. He became a director at the Milford Granite Company. He also worked with the Souheagan National Bank and the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Company.
His Family Life
On March 10, 1880, John McLane married Ellen Luetta Tuck. They had four children together. Their names were Clinton Averill, Hazel Ellen, John Roy, and Charles Malcolm.
John McLane's great-granddaughter is Ann McLane Kuster. She is currently a representative for New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives.
John McLane's Political Career
John McLane was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1885. This is a group of people who make laws for the state.
Later, in 1891, he was elected to the New Hampshire Senate. He represented different areas of the state. During his time in the Senate, he was chosen to be the president of the Senate for two terms.
In 1900, he was a delegate for New Hampshire at the Republican National Convention. This is a big meeting where the Republican Party chooses its candidate for president. In 1904, John McLane was elected to be the governor of New Hampshire.
As Governor of New Hampshire
As governor, John McLane helped get money for improving highways. Better roads make it easier for people to travel and transport goods.
During his time as governor, a very important event happened in New Hampshire. He welcomed delegates to the Russo-Japanese War Peace Conference. This meeting was held in Portsmouth and helped end a war between Russia and Japan.
John McLane passed away on April 13, 1911, in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He was buried in the West Street Cemetery in Milford, New Hampshire.
