History of Pinehurst
In 1895, a man named James Walker Tufts bought a large area of land in the North Carolina Sandhills. He wanted to build a "health resort" for people who didn't have a lot of money. Tufts hired Frederick Law Olmsted to design the village. Olmsted created the village with winding roads and a pretty central green area.
The place was first called Tuftstown or Pinealia while it was being built. By December 1895, it was renamed the village of Pinehurst. The name "Pinehurst" was suggested in a contest for another place, but it wasn't chosen there. So, Tufts decided to use it for his new village in the South. The first visitors came to Pinehurst in January 1896.
The first golf course at Pinehurst Resort was built between 1897 and 1898. The first championship held there was in 1901. The most famous golf course, Pinehurst No. 2, was designed by Donald Ross and finished in 1907. The Pinehurst Race Track was built in 1915. In 1980, Pinehurst officially became a municipality, which means it became its own town with its own local government.
Today, the Pinehurst Resort has ten golf courses, three hotels, a health spa, and many other sports and fun facilities. For a while, there was a disagreement between the village and the resort about using the name "Pinehurst" for local businesses. However, over the years, the village and the resort have learned to work together. They have a good relationship that helps both of them. Because the village and the resort are so close, you can even drive a golf cart on the public roads in the village!
Several important places in Pinehurst are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Lloyd-Howe House, the Pinehurst Historic District, and the Pinehurst Race Track.
