John Mickleburgh's Early Life

John Mickleburgh was born in Norwich, England. His father, Thomas Mickleburgh, worked as a weaver. John's exact birth year is not known, but it was around 1692.

His Time at Cambridge University

When John Mickleburgh was 17 years old, he started studying at Caius College in Cambridge. This was on May 30, 1709. He joined as a sizar. A sizar was a student who received financial help from the college. In return, they often helped with certain duties.

Soon after, he moved to Corpus Christi College. There, he became a Fellow in 1714. Being a Fellow meant he was a senior member of the college. He was involved in teaching and research.

Leading Chemistry at Cambridge

In 1718, John Mickleburgh was given a very important job. He became the professor for the 1702 Chair of Chemistry. This was a top position for chemistry at the University of Cambridge. He kept this role for many years, until he passed away in 1756.

Notable Students He Taught

During his time as a professor, John Mickleburgh taught many students. Some of them became important scholars themselves. For example, he taught John Morgan. John Morgan later became the Professor of Anatomy at Cambridge. He held that position from 1728 to 1734.

Mickleburgh also taught George Cuthbert and Robert Bankes. These two students later took over the Professor of Anatomy role after John Morgan. This shows the lasting impact Mickleburgh had on science education.
