Chef John's Early Life and Learning

John Mitzewich finished college in New York in 1983. He studied Culinary Arts, which is all about cooking and becoming a chef. He did so well that he was even named the "Outstanding Chef Training Student" that year!

Chef John's Cooking Career

Chef John has worked in many different roles in restaurants. He was an Executive Sous Chef at the Carnelian Room. He also worked as a Sous Chef at Ryan's Café. For five years, he taught cooking at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. After that, he decided to focus on teaching people to cook online.

He works with Allrecipes.com, a big online food network. He also wrote a cookbook called America's Family Favorites: The Best of Home Cooking. In 2011, he won an award for being the "Best Home Chef in a Series" from Taste TV.

Chef John's YouTube Channel

Chef John has a unique way of sharing his recipes online. He puts the exact ingredient amounts and background information on his blog. Then, he explains how to make the recipe in a video on his YouTube channel. The video usually doesn't list all the ingredients. This way, he gets paid from ads on both his blog and YouTube!

As of November 2023, Chef John's YouTube channel has over 4.43 million subscribers. His videos have been watched more than 1 billion times! He even has a special agreement with YouTube for his content.

Chef John's Podcast

In May 2021, Chef John Mitzewich started "the chef John podcast." He hosted it with Andrew Scrivani. They would chat about recipes and make fun "top five" lists about food. They released 33 episodes, each lasting 15 to 35 minutes. It seems they stopped making new episodes in December 2022.

Chef John's Unique Cooking Style

A special thing about Chef John's videos is how he films them. He never shows his face! You only see his hands, the ingredients, and the cooking tools. He records his voice-over later, after filming. His narration is always calm and a bit like a song. He often includes a funny rhyming joke in each video. For example, he might say, "You are, after all, the Jim Kelly of what goes in your belly!"

Another unique part of his cooking is that he adds powdered cayenne pepper to almost every recipe. He says this spice gives an "extra touch of the heat." It also helps bring out the unique flavors of the dishes.

Chef John's Personal Life

In 2019, Chef John and his wife moved to Sebastopol, California. They bought a home there. Chef John sometimes shares updates about their home renovations on his YouTube channel's community tab.
