John Mountstephen facts for kids
John Mountstephen (born April 28, 1644 – died December 19, 1706) was an important person in English politics. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country. He represented a place called West Looe in Cornwall.
For about eighteen years, John Mountstephen worked closely with a powerful person named Robert Spencer, the 2nd Earl of Sunderland. He served as an under-secretary, helping the Earl with important government tasks. John Mountstephen passed away in December 1706.
Early Life and Education
John Mountstephen was the second son of John Mountsteven and Elizabeth Tamlyn. His family lived in St Mabyn, a town in Cornwall.
He went to school in Bodmin and later studied at Christ Church, Oxford, which is a famous university. In 1685, while he was working as a secretary for the Earl of Sunderland, John Mountstephen bought a large piece of land called Lancarffe in Helland. After John's death, his brother, William, inherited the Lancarffe property.
