Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Mylles (born around 1604 – died March 1676) was an English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government, in 1659 and 1660.

A Politician's Journey

John Mylles was an important person during a time of big changes in England. He supported the side of Parliament during the English Civil War era. This was a time when the King and Parliament were often in disagreement.

Mylles's Role in the Army

Mylles had a special job in the army. He was a "judge advocate." This meant he was a legal officer for the army. He helped with legal matters and rules for the soldiers.

Working at Oxford University

John Mylles also had a role at Oxford University. Between 1648 and 1650, he was given a job at Christ Church, Oxford. This was a college within the university. His job was called a "prebendary," which is a type of church official.

However, he was removed from this job soon after. This happened because he had not taken a special promise of loyalty. Later, by 1659, he was given his job back at Christ Church.

Serving in Parliament

In 1659, John Mylles was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented Oxford University in a group called the Third Protectorate Parliament. An MP is someone elected to speak for their area in the government.

He was chosen again in 1660 to be an MP for Oxford University. This time, he served in the Convention Parliament. This Parliament was important because it helped bring back the King after a period of no king.
