John Neville, 3rd Baron Latimer (born 17 November 1493 – died 2 March 1543) was an important English nobleman. He was known as the 3rd Baron Latimer. His third wife, Catherine Parr, later became a famous queen of England. She married King Henry VIII.

A Powerful Family Background

John Neville was born on 17 November 1493. He was the oldest son of Richard Neville, 2nd Baron Latimer. His mother was Anne Stafford. The Neville family was one of the oldest and most powerful families in northern England. They were well-known for their long history of serving in the military.

Early Life and Public Service

John Neville began his career at the royal court. He was one of the King's gentlemen-pensioners. This meant he was a special attendant or bodyguard to King Henry VIII.

In 1513, he joined King Henry VIII's army in France. He fought in the French campaign. After the capture of Tournai, he was made a knight. Around 1517, he helped with an investigation. In 1529, he became a knight of the shire for Yorkshire. This meant he was a representative for Yorkshire in the English Parliament.

Important Roles and Challenges

John Neville's father passed away before 1530. John then took over his father's title and lands. In 1530, he was appointed to the Council of the North. This council helped to govern the northern parts of England. He also signed a letter asking Pope Clement VII to allow King Henry VIII to divorce Catherine of Aragon. John Neville mostly lived at his home, Snape Castle, in Yorkshire.

In 1536, John Neville became involved in a major event called the Pilgrimage of Grace. This was a large protest in northern England. It was rumored that the protesters captured him. He later said that being among them was "a very painful and dangerous time." However, he also represented the protesters in talks with the King's leaders. He helped to arrange a peaceful agreement and an amnesty for many people. He then returned home and did not take part in another protest the next year.

Later Life and Passing

John Neville passed away on 2 March 1543 in London. He was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral.
