The John Peters House is a very old and important house in Blue Hill, Maine. It's located on a spot called Peters Point. This house was built in 1815. It was made bigger around 1900 and again in 1920.
The house is special because it belonged to John Peters. He was one of the first people to own land in Blue Hill. He arrived there in 1765. John Peters was a very important person in the town's early days. His house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. After being an inn for a while, it is now a place you can rent for parties or other events.
What Does the John Peters House Look Like?
The Peters House stands in the middle of Peters Point. This area is found off Steamboat Wharf Road, east of Blue Hill village. The house has two and a half stories. Its roof slopes down on two sides, which is called a side gable roof.
The main part of the house has brick walls on three sides. The parts at the ends, called gables, are made of wood. There are two chimneys on the sides of the main house. The front of the house has five window sections. The front door has simple decorations around it. These include narrow windows on the sides and flat columns.
Around 1900, a large, two-story porch was added to the front. It has fancy columns that support it. About the same time, a sunporch was built on the left side of the main house. Behind the main house and sunporch is a two-story wooden section. Another brick section extends even further from there.
Who Was John Peters?
John Peters was born in Andover, Massachusetts. He came to the Blue Hill area in 1765. He was one of the first "proprietors" of the town. A proprietor was someone who owned a lot of land and helped set up the town. John Peters owned more than 1,600 acres of land in the area.
He was very active in Blue Hill's government. He served as the town clerk and in other important roles. John Peters was also a land surveyor. This meant he measured and mapped land. He worked as a land agent for William Bingham, a businessman from Philadelphia. Bingham was the biggest landowner in the region around 1800.
John Peters had other businesses too. He ran a gristmill, which grinds grain into flour. He also had a shipyard, where boats were built. He helped start the Blue Hill Academy as one of its first trustees. Peters had this house built in 1815, when he was 80 years old.
From Home to Event Space
In the 1900s, the John Peters House became an inn and a resort. People could stay there for vacations. Today, the house is part of a 22-acre estate. This estate is used as a retreat and a place for events.
The main house and a small cottage are available to rent. There is also a barn on the property. This barn offers space for meetings and has facilities for catering food. It's a popular spot for gatherings and special occasions.
