John Pibush's Early Life and Training
John Pibush was likely the son of Thomas Pibush and Jane Danby. He traveled to Reims, France, in 1580. Reims was a significant place for English Catholics during that time. There, he began his studies to become a priest.
He received several levels of training, known as "orders," over the next few years. These steps prepared him for his religious duties. John Pibush officially became a priest in March 1587.
Returning to England and Arrests
In January 1589, John Pibush was sent back to England. This was part of a "mission" to serve the Catholic community there. At this time, practicing Catholicism in England was very difficult and often illegal.
In 1593, he was arrested in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire. He was then sent to London. The Privy Council, a group of advisors to the Queen, sent him to the Gatehouse prison in Westminster. He stayed there for about a year.
Trials and Imprisonment
John Pibush was later tried in Gloucester. The charge was for being a priest, which was against the law at the time under the Jesuits, etc. Act 1584. He was not sentenced at this trial and was sent back to Gloucester prison.
In February 1595, he managed to escape from prison. However, he was recaptured the very next day in Matson. He was then sent to another prison in London called the Marshalsea.
He faced another trial in July 1595. Again, he was tried under the same law for being a priest. This time, he was sentenced to death. He was to be executed at St. Thomas's Waterings.
Final Years in Prison
After his sentencing, John Pibush was returned to the Marshalsea prison. By the end of 1595, he was moved to the Queen's Bench prison. He remained in this prison for more than five years.
His sentence was finally carried out on February 18, 1601. John Pibush is remembered as a brave figure who stood firm in his beliefs.
