John Ponsonby was born in 1713. He was the second son of Brabazon Ponsonby. His father became the first Earl of Bessborough in 1739. John's family was well-known and powerful in Ireland.
His Political Career
John Ponsonby started his political journey in 1739. He became a member of the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament or main law-making group in Ireland at the time. He represented the area of Newtownards.
In 1756, John Ponsonby became the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. The Speaker is like the leader of the parliament. They make sure meetings run smoothly. He also worked as the First Commissioner of the Revenue. This meant he helped manage the country's money. In 1746, he joined the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King.
Ponsonby was elected to represent different areas. These included County Kilkenny and Armagh. He usually chose to represent County Kilkenny. He served there until 1783. Later, he represented Newtownards again until he passed away in 1787.
