John Robichaux (1866–1939) was an American jazz bandleader, drummer, and violinist. He was a very important musician in early jazz history. He was also the uncle of another famous musician, Joseph Robichaux.
John Robichaux's Musical Journey
John Robichaux was born on January 16, 1866, in Thibodaux, Louisiana. In 1891, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. There, he played the bass drum for the famous Excelsior Brass Band from 1892 to 1903.
While playing with the band, he also led his own music groups. He played the violin in these groups starting in 1893. He continued to lead bands until he passed away. In 1913, one of his orchestras had 36 musicians!
Robichaux's bands were highly respected. Many of New Orleans' best musicians played with him. These included Bud Scott, Lorenzo Tio, and Manuel Perez. John Robichaux wrote over 350 songs. He also created many musical arrangements for orchestras. These important musical works are now kept at the William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University.
