Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Roscoe (1861–1932) was an Anglican missionary who traveled to East Africa. A missionary is someone who goes to another country to share their religious beliefs. John Roscoe also studied the people and cultures he met during his time there. He collected information about their traditions and ways of life.

Who Was John Roscoe?

John Roscoe was born in 1861, during a time in history called the Victorian era. This was when Queen Victoria ruled Britain. Many people in Britain at that time believed it was their duty to help and "improve" people in other parts of the world.

Early Life and Journey to Africa

Before becoming a missionary, John Roscoe studied civil engineering. This means he learned how to design and build things like roads and bridges. Later, he joined the Church Missionary Society. This was a group that sent missionaries to different countries.

In 1884, Roscoe traveled to a place that became known as the Uganda Protectorate. A protectorate was an area controlled by the British government. He lived among different African tribes there until 1909.

Roscoe's Book About Africa

After his many years in Africa, John Roscoe wrote a book called Twenty-Five Years in East Africa. It was published in 1921. He wrote this book to share what he had learned about the people and cultures of East Africa. He wanted it to be a helpful guide for other British people.

John Roscoe and David Livingstone

John Roscoe's journey and work were quite similar to those of another famous explorer and missionary, David Livingstone. Livingstone was a big influence on Roscoe.

Shared Beliefs and Goals

Like Livingstone, Roscoe believed that bringing Christianity to African communities would be good for them. He also thought it was very important to study Africa scientifically. This meant learning about its geography, animals, and especially its people.

Roscoe admired Livingstone's work, especially his efforts to stop slavery. He often referred to Livingstone's ideas on how to best work in Africa. Even though Roscoe lived in a later time when Britain had more control in Africa, he still valued Livingstone's contributions.
