His Early Life and Start in Science
John Roxborough Norman didn't start his career studying fish. He first worked as a clerk in a bank. During the First World War, he served in the military. While serving, he got a serious health condition called rheumatic fever, which affected him for the rest of his life.
In 1921, Norman joined the British Museum. There, he worked with another famous fish scientist, Charles Tate Regan (1878-1943). This was the start of his exciting career studying fish.
Leading a Museum and Writing Books
From 1939 to 1944, John Norman was in charge of the Natural History Museum at Tring. This museum is a special place where many animal specimens are kept and studied.
Norman also wrote important books about fish. His book A History of Fishes was published in 1931. Another key work, A Draft Synopsis of the Orders, Families and Genera of Recent Fishes, was published in 1957, after he had passed away. These books helped many other scientists learn about different types of fish.
