The John S. Baker House is a historic house located in the East Walnut Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It was built in 1854. The house was designed by a famous Cincinnati architect named James Keys Wilson. It was the home of John S. Baker, who came from New Jersey and settled in Cincinnati in 1814. James Keys Wilson was actually John S. Baker's nephew.

What Makes the John S. Baker House Special?

The Baker House is mostly built from brick. It also has some parts made of wood siding. The house sits on a strong stone foundation. Its roof is made of metal.

Unique Gothic Revival Style

The house's architecture is very unique. It stands out because of its special Gothic Revival style. There are no other large brick houses in the Cincinnati area that look quite like it. This style makes the house look a bit like a castle.

Castle-like Features

Many details make the house seem like a castle. It has a tall tower. It also features battlements and crenellations. These are the fancy, notched tops you might see on old castles. The windows are also unusual. They are placed in unique spots and have interesting shapes.

Perfect Location for a Grand View

The house's location makes it look even more impressive. It sits high up on a river bluff. This means you can see the house from far away. Its grand appearance is easy to spot from a distance.

Why the House is Historic

In 1979, the John S. Baker House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. The house was listed because of its historically significant architecture.

Other Buildings on the Property

When the house was added to the list, two other buildings were included. These were a studio and a home for servants. They are located on the side of the bluff, below the main house.
