East Walnut Hills is a cool neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio. It's one of 52 neighborhoods in the city! This area was started in 1867 and became part of Cincinnati in 1873. In 2020, about 4,103 people lived here. You can find it on the eastern side of Cincinnati.

The Story of East Walnut Hills

East Walnut Hills started as a small village called Woodburn in 1867. It was known as a home for many important people from Cincinnati. The village grew by mixing a small German Catholic community with the large homes of Cincinnati business owners. By 1873, it officially became part of Cincinnati.

Amazing Old Buildings and Famous People

This neighborhood has a special historic area. It's located between the O'Bryonville business district and DeSales Corner. Here, you can see huge mansions with big yards. There's also Annwood Park and the Bettman Preserve, which is a nature spot right in the city!

Many large homes line William Howard Taft Road. From there, you can see great views of the Ohio River and Downtown Cincinnati. Some older homes near St. Ursula Academy are now being turned into apartments.

East Walnut Hills is also home to the historic Saint Francis De Sales Catholic Church and School. You can find it where Madison Road and Woodburn Avenue meet. Purcell Marian High School is also in the neighborhood.

The old homes in East Walnut Hills show off many different building styles. You can see examples of Romantic, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Queen Ann, Romanesque, Italian Revival, and English Country Revival designs. These homes are often part of local tours where people can visit historic houses and gardens.

Madison Road was once called Madisonville Pike in the early 1850s. It's where the first buildings in the neighborhood were put up. The historic John S. Baker House was designed by a famous Cincinnati architect named James Keys Wilson.

Other well-known people who lived in East Walnut Hills include William W. Scarborough, a grocery merchant. Joshua Hall Bates, a general from the Civil War, built his home here in 1858. Charles Dexter, a Civil War veteran and heir to a liquor business, also lived here.

The neighborhood is often called an "urban forest" because it has so many large trees. There's even a bird sanctuary between Wold Avenue and Dexter Place.
