The John S. Whitman House is a special home located at 2407 Manor Street in Midland, Michigan. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it is recognized as an important historical building.

A Special House and Its Builder

John Whitman was a very important person in Midland. He served as the mayor of the city from 1921 to 1930. A mayor is like the main leader of a city. Mr. Whitman was also involved in several local businesses. One of his businesses made special building blocks. These blocks were used by a famous architect named Alden B. Dow.

In late 1934, John Whitman asked Alden B. Dow to design a house for him. He wanted a house built using those special blocks. Dow finished the design by the end of 1934. The house was then built in 1935.

This house design was very successful! It won a big award in 1937. The award was for residential architecture at a major event in Paris, France. This award helped the young architect Alden B. Dow become more famous.

What the House Looks Like

The John S. Whitman House is built from three long, narrow rectangular sections. These sections are stacked on top of each other. The house looks very long and flat, which is called a "horizontal" look.

This horizontal design is balanced by some vertical lines. These vertical lines come from the chimney and special windows. There is a patio window and bay windows on one side of the house. The main entrance is a small, tucked-away door near the garage.
