Who is Jonathan Silver?

Jonathan Silver played a key role in the early days of the band Genesis. He helped create some of their first recorded music.

Early Life and Music

Jonathan Silver grew up in England. He attended St Edward's School in Oxford. Interestingly, the band Genesis used to practice at his parents' house in Oxford. This shows how important his family's support was to the band's beginnings.

Joining and Leaving Genesis

Jonathan became the drummer for Genesis in 1968. He took over from the band's first drummer, Chris Stewart. Jonathan played on Genesis's very first album, called From Genesis to Revelation. He also appears on a special collection of early recordings, Genesis Archive 1967-75. Jonathan left Genesis in August 1969. He decided to leave the band to continue his studies at Cornell University. After he left, another drummer named John Mayhew joined Genesis.

Life After Genesis

After his time with Genesis, Jonathan Silver pursued other interests and built a family.

Family and Career

Jonathan Silver lives in London with his wife, Lucy. They have three children named Leo, Max, and Libby. In the 1980s, Jonathan also worked for a short time at Thames Television in London.

Musical Connections and Tributes

Even after leaving Genesis, Jonathan remained connected to the music world. In 1973, some former Genesis members, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford, and Phil Collins, recorded a song especially for him. This song was called "Silver Song." Different versions of "Silver Song" have appeared on albums by Anthony Phillips. Jonathan Silver also played on another recording from 1973. This was called "Fantomas Opening Theme" and can be found on Phillips' album Archive Collection Volume II.
