John Solon became involved in his local government. In 1862, he was chosen as the Town Treasurer of Shields. He took over this job after his father passed away. The next year, he was officially elected to the position.

He also served as the town chairman of Shields. This role is similar to being a mayor for the town. He held this important position from 1869 to 1870.

John Solon was a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. This is a part of the state's government that makes laws. He represented the southern area of Dodge County. He served in the Assembly during the 1872 session.
