Becoming the Earl of Buchan
John Stewart was the son of Alexander Stewart. When his father passed away in 1505, John became the next Earl. However, for some years, he was known as the Master of Buchan. This was a title for the son who would inherit the earldom. In 1519, he was officially recognized as the Earl.
Handing Over His Lands
On August 4, 1547, John Stewart decided to hand over his lands to his son, also named John Stewart. This meant his son would manage the lands and title. However, the 3rd Earl still kept the right to use and benefit from the lands during his lifetime.
John Stewart's Family
John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Buchan, married a woman named Margaret. She was the daughter of Sir James Scrymgeour of Dudhope, who was an important official known as the Constable of Dundee. Together, John and Margaret had several children:
- John Stewart, who was known as the Master of Buchan.
- He married two times. His first wife was Mary, the only child of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray.
- His second wife was Margaret, the daughter of Walter Ogilvy of the Boyne.
- Sadly, this John Stewart was killed in a big battle called the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh on September 10, 1547.
- He had one child with Margaret Ogilvy:
- Christina Stewart, who later became the Countess of Buchan.
- James Stewart, who became the Master of Buchan after his brother John died in 1547.
- James married Christian, the daughter of John Strang of Balcaskie. They had several children:

The End of His Life
