The John Strong House is a really old and important house in Addison, Vermont. It's now a museum where you can learn about history! A man named John Strong built this beautiful home between 1795 and 1796. He was an important leader in Vermont and fought in the American Revolutionary War. The house is a great example of a style called Federal architecture. Today, the Daughters of the American Revolution group takes care of it as a museum. It's open to visitors from late May to early September. The house is also surrounded by the D.A.R. State Park, which is a fun place to visit! This historic house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, meaning it's officially recognized as a special landmark.

About the John Strong House

The John Strong House is located on the west side of Vermont Route 17W. It has a great view of Lake Champlain in western Addison. The house sits on a small piece of land that is now completely surrounded by the D.A.R. State Park.

What the House Looks Like

It's a large, two-story building made of brick. The roof is shaped like a hip, which means it slopes down on all four sides. In the middle of the front, there's a triangular section called a gable. The roof has a fancy edge with small block-like decorations.

The front of the house is wide and balanced, with five sections. The main door is in the middle of the first floor. Above it, on the second floor, there's a beautiful window with three parts, called a Palladian window. The main entrance has wide windows on either side. A porch with a pointed roof, added in the early 1900s, covers the entrance. Inside, many of the original details are still there. This includes a lovely central staircase and decorative frames around the fireplaces.

The Story of John Strong

John Strong was born in Connecticut. He moved to the Addison area in 1765. He built his first house close to where this grand house stands today. People say his first home was built on the spot of an older French house. That French house was supposedly burned down during the French and Indian War.

John Strong's Role in History

John Strong was a brave soldier. He served in the Vermont militia during the American Revolutionary War. Sadly, his first house was burned down by the British during the war. After the war ended, he rebuilt that house. Then, in the 1790s, he built this much larger and more impressive home as a replacement.

The House Becomes a Museum

In 1934, the Vermont chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution bought John Strong's land. They later gave most of this land to the state. This gift helped create the D.A.R. State Park, which is now a popular place for people to visit and enjoy nature. The John Strong House itself became a museum, preserving a piece of Vermont's early history for everyone to learn from.
