He was born in Christian County, Kentucky. In the 1850s, he owned and captained steamboats on the Willamette River. During the American Civil War, he served as a first lieutenant in the Oregon Cavalry.
A Life of Service

Serving the Public
John T. Apperson was the sheriff of Clackamas County. A sheriff is a top law enforcement officer in a county. He also served in the Oregon House of Representatives in 1870. This is a group of people who help make laws for the state.

Steamboat Adventures
In 1861, Apperson built a steamboat called the Unio. He built it on the Willamette River in Canemah, Oregon. He operated the Unio from October to December 1861. Then, he sold the boat to another captain, James D. Miller. Even after selling it, Apperson still worked on the Unio as a clerk in April 1862. A clerk often helps manage the boat's records and business.
