John T. Morgan Academy, often called Morgan Academy, is a school in Selma, Alabama, USA. It was started in 1965.
School History and Changes
Morgan Academy is named after John Tyler Morgan. He was a general during the American Civil War. He was also part of a group called the Ku Klux Klan, which was known for its role in a time of racial separation.
The school opened in 1965. This was soon after important events called the Selma to Montgomery marches. These marches helped bring about equal rights for all people.
When it first started, the school held classes in the John Tyler Morgan House. A new school campus was built in 1967.
For many years, the school only had white students. But in 2008, something important happened. The school welcomed its first African American student. This was a big step towards becoming a more inclusive place.
In 2021, Bryan Oliver became the new headmaster of Morgan Academy.
