John Tempest (who passed away on July 26, 1697) was an English politician. He made history by becoming the very first Member of Parliament (MP) for the County of Durham. Who Was John Tempest?

John Tempest was an important figure in his time. He was known for his military service and his role in government.

Early Life and Family

John Tempest was the son of Sir Thomas Tempest. His father was a lawyer who worked for the government in Durham, England, and later in Ireland. John's mother was Eleanor Tempest.

John Tempest was sometimes called "of the Isle." This referred to a manor (a large estate) located west of Bradbury, County Durham. Later, he also became connected to Old Durham through his wife, Elizabeth. She was the only daughter and heir of John Heath.

A Soldier for the King

In 1637, John Tempest began his studies at The Queen's College, Oxford University. He was a strong supporter of King Charles I. This meant he was a "Royalist" during a time of great conflict in England.

He became a Colonel, leading a group of soldiers called a regiment of foot. He fought for King Charles I in several important battles. These included the battle of Northallerton in 1644 and the famous battle of Marston Moor. He also took part in the siege of Skipton Castle.

Public Service and Politics

After the conflicts, John Tempest continued to serve his country. In 1661, he was chosen to be a Knight of the Royal Oak. This was an honor given to people who had supported the King.

In 1662, he became the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Durham. This was a high-ranking position, helping to represent the King in the county. He also became the Governor of Kepier School, showing his involvement in education.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

John Tempest was elected as one of the first two Members of Parliament for County Durham. In the election, he received 1034 votes. The other person elected was Thomas Vane.

Sadly, Thomas Vane passed away shortly after the election. His younger brother, Christopher Vane, then took his place as an MP.

Later Life and Legacy

John Tempest passed away on July 26, 1697. He was buried in a place called Forcett in North Yorkshire. He is remembered as a significant figure in the early political history of County Durham.
