Who Was John Thomas?
John Thomas was born on June 23, 1691. His father worked as a drayman, which means he delivered goods using a horse-drawn cart, for a brewery in London. Even though his family was not wealthy, John was able to attend the local parish school.
Early Life and Education
John Thomas continued his education at Merchant Taylors' School. This was an important step for him. He then went on to Catharine Hall, Cambridge University. He earned his first degree in 1713 and a master's degree in 1717. Later, he received a special doctorate degree in 1728.
A Career in the Church
After finishing his studies, John Thomas became a chaplain. A chaplain is a minister who works in a specific place, like a hospital, military unit, or, in his case, for English merchants in Hamburg, Germany. He was very popular there. He even started a German newspaper called The Patriot. This newspaper was similar to a famous English one called The Spectator.
Working with the King
His work in Germany caught the attention of George II, the King of England. The King liked John Thomas and wanted him to have important jobs in England. In 1736, John Thomas became the rector of St Vedast Foster Lane church. A rector is the main priest of a parish. The King even asked John Thomas to travel with him to Hanover, Germany. John Thomas knew German well, which helped him connect with the King.
Becoming a Bishop
In 1740, John Thomas became the dean of Peterborough. A dean is another important church leader, often in charge of a cathedral. In 1743, he was chosen to be a bishop for the first time. He was first nominated for the bishopric of St Asaph. However, he was quickly moved to become the Bishop of Lincoln. He was officially made Bishop of Lincoln on April 1, 1744.
Later Life and Legacy
In November 1761, John Thomas was moved again to become the Bishop of Salisbury. This was a very important position. As Bishop of Salisbury, he also held a special role as the Chancellor of the Order of the Garter. This is a very old and respected order of knighthood in Britain.
John Thomas passed away in Salisbury on July 20, 1766. He was buried in Salisbury Cathedral. He had one daughter, who married a man named John Taylor. John Thomas was also known for writing and publishing sermons, which are religious speeches, between 1739 and 1756.
