John Tiktak (Inuktitut syllabics: ᔭᓐ ᑎᑕ) was an important Canadian Inuk sculptor. He was born in 1916 in a place called Kareak camp, near Hudson Bay. John Tiktak spent most of his life as an artist in Rankin Inlet. He was known for making sculptures that looked like people. He passed away in 1981.
John Tiktak's Life and Art
John Tiktak grew up living a traditional Inuit way of life. This was before he moved to a community in the 1950s. First, he moved to Arviat, which was then known as Eskimo Point.
In 1958, he moved again to Rankin Inlet. This place is also called Kangiqilniq. It was there, in 1963, that John Tiktak started his career as a sculptor.
Tiktak's Unique Style
John Tiktak's sculptures are known for their simple and modern look. He often made figures that were very rounded. A special feature of his art was how he shaped the hands. They were often attached to the sides of the body, making the arms look like circles. This unique style made his work stand out.
