John VIII de Bourbon (born 1425 – died January 6, 1478) was an important French nobleman. He was the Count of Vendôme from 1446 until his death. A count was a powerful ruler of a specific area, similar to a duke or a prince. John VIII was a member of the famous House of Bourbon, which was a very important royal family in France. He was the son of Louis, Count of Vendôme, and he took over his father's title.
John VIII was a close helper, or "courtier," to King Charles VII of France. During this time, France was fighting against England in a long conflict known as the Hundred Years' War. John VIII helped the king by fighting against the English in regions like Normandy and Guyenne.
Later, he supported King Louis XI. However, he wasn't always a favorite of the king. Because of this, he spent more time at his own home, the Château of Lavardin. He worked on finishing the building of this beautiful castle.
