John Wandesford (born 1593, died 1665) was an English politician from Kirklington, Yorkshire. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like the main law-making group in England. He served there at different times between 1624 and 1665.

Early Life and Education

John Wandesford was the second son of Sir George Wandesford. His mother was Catherine Hansby. He also had an older brother named Christopher Wandesford.

John went to Cambridge University for his education. After that, he started studying law at Gray's Inn in London on February 28, 1613. Gray's Inn was a famous place where people learned to become lawyers.

Political Career

John Wandesford had an interesting career in politics. He was elected to Parliament several times.

First Time in Parliament

In April 1624, John Wandesford became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Richmond. An MP is someone chosen by the people to represent them and help make laws.

After this, he was given a special job as a consul in Aleppo. A consul is like a representative for their country in a foreign city.

The Short Parliament

Later, in 1640, John was elected as an MP again. This time, he represented Hythe. This Parliament was known as the "Short Parliament" because it only lasted for a very brief time.

During the English Civil War

John Wandesford was a "Royalist." This means he strongly supported the King during the time of the English Civil War. Because of his support for the King, he had to live in exile in Paris during a period called the "Interregnum." This was a time when England did not have a king.

Return to Parliament

After the Restoration of the Monarchy, when the King returned to power, John Wandesford was elected to Parliament once more. He again represented Richmond. He served in the Cavalier Parliament from 1662 until he passed away. The Cavalier Parliament was a group of MPs who were very loyal to the King.

Death

John Wandesford never married. He died in 1665 and was buried at St Andrews, Holborn on January 21, 1665.
