John Wesley Crockett (born July 10, 1807 – died November 24, 1852) was an American politician. He represented Tennessee in the United States House of Representatives. This was the same area his famous father, Davy Crockett, had represented before him.
Early Life and Education
John Wesley Crockett was born in East Tennessee on July 10, 1807. His father was David (Davy) Crockett, a well-known frontiersman and politician. His mother was Mary (Polly) Finley. John had two siblings: a brother named William and a sister named Margaret.
He attended public schools when he was young. Later, he studied law and became a lawyer. He started his law practice in a town called Paris, Tennessee. John Wesley Crockett married Martha Hamilton, and they had fourteen children together.
Political Career
Before becoming a national politician, John Crockett held several local and state jobs. He was a member of the Whig Party. He was elected to the United States Congress for two terms. He served from March 4, 1837, to March 3, 1841. He took over from Adam Huntsman, the person who had defeated his father in an earlier election.
After his time in Congress, John Crockett was chosen by the Tennessee General Assembly to be the attorney general for Tennessee's ninth district. An attorney general is the chief legal officer for a state. He held this position from 1841 to 1843.
Later Life and Work
In 1843, John Crockett moved to New Orleans. There, he became a commission merchant, which means he bought and sold goods for others. He also worked as a newspaper editor. He published a newspaper called the National starting in 1848. He also helped start another newspaper called the Crescent around 1847.
Death and Burial
John Wesley Crockett later moved to Memphis, Tennessee. He died there on November 24, 1852, when he was 45 years old. He is buried at the Old City Cemetery in Paris, Tennessee.
