John Wesley Hillman (born March 29, 1832 – died March 19, 1915) was an American prospector and explorer. He is famous for being one of the first European Americans to see the amazing Crater Lake in Oregon. He made this discovery during the exciting time of the California Gold Rush.

Early Life and Adventures

John Wesley Hillman was born in Albany, New York. When he was 16, in 1848, his family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. Just a year later, in April 1849, John went with his father on a big trip to California. This was during the famous California Gold Rush, when many people went west hoping to find gold. John decided to stay in the West even after his father went back home.

Discovering Crater Lake

On June 12, 1853, John Wesley Hillman made a very important discovery. He was exploring in Oregon and became the first European American to see a stunning blue lake. He called it "Deep Blue Lake." This beautiful lake was later renamed Crater Lake, and it is now a famous national park.

Later Years

In 1855, John Wesley Hillman was hurt during the Rogue River Wars. He injured his knee, which was a serious setback. A few years later, he decided to move back east. He settled down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and became a farmer.

John Wesley Hillman was married twice. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Hillman in April 1866. She passed away in June 1873. He then married Rosalie Frye on July 25, 1875. With Rosalie, he had four children. John Wesley Hillman passed away on March 19, 1915.
