John West, 6th Baron De La Warr facts for kids
John West, 6th Baron De La Warr (born in 1663 – died on May 26, 1723) was an important English nobleman who served in the royal court. He is also sometimes known as the 15th Baron de la Warr or Baron Delaware.
He was the second son of Charles West, 5th Baron De La Warr. When his father passed away in 1687, John inherited his important title. His older brother, Charles, who was a Member of Parliament for Andover, had died before their father in 1684.
Serving the Royal Family
John West held several important jobs working for the royal family. In 1697, he became a trusted official for Prince George of Denmark. Prince George was the husband of Queen Anne. John West held this position until Prince George died in 1708.
Later, from 1713 to 1714, he was the Treasurer of the Chamber for Queen Anne. This meant he managed some of the Queen's finances. When George I became king, John West was made a Teller of the Exchequer from 1714 to 1715. This was another role in managing government money. After that, he worked as a Treasurer of the Excise, dealing with taxes on goods.
Family Life and Legacy
John West passed away in London in 1723. He was buried at St Margaret's Church, Westminster. He was married to Margaret Freeman, whose father, John Freeman, was a successful merchant.
Their son, also named John, grew up to become a high-ranking officer in the Army. He was later given the special title of Earl. Their daughter, Elizabeth, married Thomas Digges, who lived at Chilham Castle in Kent.
