John Sam Williams (born October 26, 1966) is a former American basketball player. He played professionally for several years in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He also played in the Liga ACB in Spain.
Williams was known by the nickname "Hot Plate" Williams. This helped tell him apart from another player named John "Hot Rod" Williams. Even though he was a big player, Williams was very skilled. He was especially good at passing the ball. He often averaged more than 4 assists per game. This was a great average for a player his size. He was often used as a point forward. This meant he handled the ball and helped set up plays for his team.

John Williams played college basketball for LSU. He was a very talented player in college. In 1986, he was chosen to play in the National Basketball Association. The Washington Bullets picked him as the 12th player overall in the 1986 NBA draft.
Playing in the NBA
As a new player in the NBA, Williams played well for the Bullets. He averaged almost ten points and five rebounds per game. In his second season, he got even better. He started 37 of the 82 games he played. His third season, the 1988–89 NBA season, was his best. He achieved his highest numbers in almost every statistic. This was impressive because he usually came off the bench as a substitute.
After his third season, Williams faced some challenges. He had several injuries that caused him to miss many games. He played for eight years in the NBA. Five of those seasons were with the Washington Bullets. He also played two seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers. His final NBA season was with the Indiana Pacers. He left the NBA in 1995.

Even with these challenges, Williams' basketball skills remained strong. He still had great offensive moves and could see the court well. However, his weight did affect his ability to jump and his stamina. At his lowest, he weighed about 235 pounds. But his weight would sometimes go back up to around 260 pounds. Despite these difficulties, he had a long and successful career.
