Who Was John Wright?
John Wright was born in England. He came to the United States in 1833 and soon moved to Huron County, Ohio. John was very good at buying land. He eventually owned about 2,500 acres (1,000 ha) of land! That's a huge amount of space. He also served in the American Civil War for four years, fighting for the United States Army.
The Mansion's Unique Style
When John Wright decided to build his mansion, he chose a style called Second Empire architecture. This style was very popular in cities, but it was super rare to see such a big, fancy house built in this style on a farm! That's what makes the John Wright Mansion so unusual and special.
What Does It Look Like?
The mansion is made of brick and has three stories. It has a special kind of roof called a mansard roof, which is a sloped roof with windows sticking out, called dormers. The front of the house looks balanced and has a fancy porch with brackets in the Italianate style.
At the back of the house, there's a wing that's just as tall as the rest of the building. Inside, the mansion is huge! It has a large ballroom where people could dance, plus twenty-three other rooms. Imagine having that many rooms in your house!
A Historic Landmark Today
In early 1974, the John Wright Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical building because of its special architecture.
Today, the mansion is part of something called Historic Lime Village. This is a group of volunteers who work to keep the mansion open. They run it as a historic house museum. This means you can visit it and learn all about what life was like when John Wright lived there!
